Creating New Music!
Creating new music feels joyful to me.
It is incredible that us humans can concentrate our attention and create something out of nothing, and that newly created thing has the ability to inspire other humans to experience thoughts and feelings and maybe create their own works.
For this piece of music, I knew I was going to try and create something for the Keynote blog. I first felt an inspiration to create something around a repeated “F” note. That is how that first arpeggio pattern was born. From there, I followed my stream of consciousness around the notes on the guitar neck until I had something of a looped pattern that could be repeated. I repeated it a few times, refined the idea over 30-45 minutes or so, and then recorded it onto my computer. I made a couple edits, added a bass part, and that was that. Perhaps someday later I’ll come up with a melody and words, or maybe this is all this music will be, and that’s just great.
How what I’ve just done can be applied to music therapy can look like many different things. Writing or improvising utilizing a “stream of consciousness” idea can be a helpful tool in the toolbox. It can be used to expand a previously occurring idea, or to inspire free association thoughts that may lead anywhere, or for many other purposes. Also just sitting down and writing to keep our own musical and recording skills polished can be helpful to a music therapist as well.
I hope this music takes you on a little journey to someplace positive and exciting!
