Music Therapy Around the World!

This year the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) held its 18th conference in Bologna, Italy, where 70 countries from around the world were represented. That’s right, 70 countries from around the world came together to celebrate the profession of music therapy. I would love to share with you today a little information about this organization and their pursuit in empowering not only music therapy as a profession but music therapists as individuals. 

The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) is an international nonprofit organization that brings together music therapists from all over the world to educate, promote, and celebrate the gift of music in collaboration amongst professionals in all walks of life. Music is celebrated, people are celebrated and differences are celebrated. I don’t know about you, but I believe that the celebration of our differences are not only key in the healing of individuals but humanity as a whole. 

Founded in1985 in Genoa, Italy, the World Federation of Music Therapy connects international associations to build global standards in addition to being the only worldwide professional organization representing music therapy in many areas of the world. As music therapy continues to be a growing global profession it is key that an organization such as (WFMT) promotes music therapy globally through the exchange of information, collaboration among professionals, and actions. One could summarize it simply by saying that connection is key! Not only does (WFMT) see the importance of connection and collaboration amongst peers and professionals, they understand the importance of connecting the public's understanding of a very important question: What is music therapy?

Frequently as music therapists we find ourselves being asked; what do you do as a music therapist and who do you work with? If you haven't personally been asked this question you might just have asked it yourself. My less “sterile” pitch goes like this, “The people I work with are as diverse as music itself! From death to birth my clients range in age, ethnicity and needs. I use music as a tool and motivator to achieve individual goals and objectives for each individual client.” Just this year the World Federation of Music Therapy officially announced a revised definition of music therapy to serve as the global standard for the profession. The revised definition is presented below:

"Music therapy is a professional discipline that uses music-based experiences, such as listening, singing, playing instruments or improvisation, to promote health, well-being, capacity and development at a personal and social level.

It is delivered by trained professionals within a therapeutic relationship and is an adaptable, inclusive, therapeutic modality that serves individuals, groups and communities across clinical, educational, cultural and virtual settings.

Music therapy practice is research-based, shaped by professional education and clinical training, guided by ethical responsibility and informed by social, cultural and political context."

(WFMT, 2026).

The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) believes in a world where music therapy is universally accessible, culturally integrated and professionally recognized. As a music therapist currently practicing in the United States of America I believe in this vision as much as I believe in the power of music and human connection. I find myself smiling and wondering what the world will look like in another decade as people embrace each other's differences and the power of music.
