As the 4th of July approaches, the anticipation of fireworks fills the air and what better way to bring that excitement into your music therapy sessions than through a vibrant, multi-sensory drumming intervention?

This fireworks drumming intervention is a fun, accessible activity that can be used in both group and one-on-one settings. It’s designed to simulate the sights and sounds of a fireworks show, offering clients a safe and controlled way to experience the excitement through rhythm, movement, and sensory play.

Begin by arranging your clients in a circle around a gathering drum. This encourages group connection, eye contact, and shared focus. Take a few minutes to explore playing the drum together, experimenting with different tempos and dynamics. This warm-up helps group regulation and prepares them for the fireworks excitement to come.

Explain to your group that they’ll be creating their very own fireworks display using colorful pom pom balls and rhythmic drumming. Start by gently placing colorful pom poms on the surface of the drum. Explain that in the beginning, they must play very softly to keep the pom poms on the drum - just like the quiet anticipation before a real fireworks show!

Listed below are firework song ideas for the music therapist to use for recorded or live music during this intervention. As the music builds, invite them to explore different playing techniques: tapping with one finger, then two, and gradually with their whole hand. Observe how the pom poms react to each type of movement. This not only builds fine motor skills and coordination but also creates a sense of excitement as the energy builds.

When the music reaches its chorus for example, in Katy Perry’s “Firework” (“Baby, you’re a firework”) encourage your clients to drum with larger movements, creating the dramatic “explosions” that send the pom poms flying into the air for your grand finale!

Once all the pom poms have flown off, encourage the group to pick them up and place them back on the drum - a perfect opportunity to practice fine motor control of the pincer grasp and reset for another round. You can repeat the activity, encouraging teamwork and creative expression as clients try new rhythms, dynamics, and techniques together.

Happy drumming and Happy 4th of July!
