"Healthy We Will Be"; Rewriting an old tune for self-care and support

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

There is no doubt about it, the year 2020 has given us all an opportunity to reflect upon the things that are truly important in life. Personally, I have been especially mindful and grateful for good health and opportunities to take care of myself. Whether that be through access to healthy foods or with a sweet evening walk with my pup, I have realized the importance of nurturing my physical, emotional and mental well-being this year.

The older adult populations in our communities may not have the means to these sorts of self-care practices. For example, activities such as socializing, engaging within the community or exercising are likely high-risk and anxiety provoking for these groups.

With some of my older adult music therapy clients, I have been rewriting the lyrics to the song "Button Up Your Overcoat" by Ruth Etting. The goal of this intervention is to support my clients in coming up with ways they can take care of themselves during this isolating time. I've had responses anywhere from "eat Brussels sprouts" to "take deep breaths"- all great methods for self-care! This can be implemented virtually or in person.

You can find the layout for the song below:

Button up your overcoat, when the wind is free

We take good care of ourselves

Healthy we will be

Eat _____________ every day

Get to bed by _____________

We take good care of ourselves

Healthy we will be

____________ OOh, OOh,

____________ Ooh, OOh,

____________ OOh, Ooh,

Feeling good through mind and body

Button up your overcoat, when the wind is free

We take good care of ourselves

Healthy we will be
