What is Music Therapy?

According to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Music Therapy is defined as “the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”

What does it mean to be an MT-BC?

The first step toward earning the MT-BC credential is to obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher in music therapy from an accredited music therapy program. After completing an approved internship, and a minimum of 1000 clinical hours, individuals are eligible to sit for the written examination, which assesses their professional music therapy skills. Upon passing the Board Examination, they receive the Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) Credential, which is valid for 5 years. Music therapists must then recertify every 5 years to ensure continued competence by accumulating 100 hours of continuing education credits.

Why is the MT-BC credential important?

Board certification in music therapy is essential as it establishes an objective national standard. This certification protects the public by verifying that providers possess the clinical knowledge, skills, and abilities required to practice music therapy within their scope. It signifies an individual’s commitment to evidence-based practices.

While many people can use music to foster positive changes, only board-certified music therapists are trained to use evidence-based approaches to facilitate music therapy sessions in order to achieve individualized and measurable goals. Through their education and clinical experiences, music therapists are equipped to work with a variety of diagnoses, ages, and trauma-informed situations.

What is Evidence-Based Practice?

Music therapy is an evidence-based practice. But what does that mean? It refers to the use of the best available research, clinical expertise, and client needs and values to achieve therapeutic goals.

As the field continues to grow, both clients and professionals must recognize the importance of board certification, as it guarantees that music therapy is conducted by qualified individuals capable of addressing diverse needs. By integrating evidence-based practices into their sessions, music therapists can foster meaningful change in the lives of individuals they serve, making a profound impact on overall well-being.
